The BSc Medical Sciences (Surgery) is a programme consisting of ethical, statistical, research skills training and a clinical skills module made up of clinical experience in a surgical team in the South Yorkshire region and specialist teaching on surgical research and surgical skills. Students then complete a clinical research project in their specialist surgical area.
The course gives students an incredible opportunity to gain experience in a surgical environment while undertaking high calibre academic research. Available types of clinical experience and project include: trauma and orthopaedics at the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, breast surgery, urological and GI surgical techniques. Novel surgical techniques involving 3D printing and Virtual Reality can be studied as well as reviews of the impact of different surgical techniques and treatments on health conditions.
Previous students have had the opportunity to present their data at national and international conferences and some students have successfully published their work. All students have found that having this experience has opened up more opportunities to them, whilst improving various transferable skills, including research project design, critical thinking, time-management, academic, written and oral communication skills and thereby enhancing their future careers.
Entry requirements
Students who have successfully completed at least two years of your current Medicine course are eligible to be considered to undertake a medical sciences research degree.
Closing date
We welcome applications for the medical sciences research degree from November each year, with a start date of September the following year. In the first instance please browse the project directory and contact us to discuss the processes in more detail and how to arrange a meeting with a prospective supervisor. First round applications need to be submitted by mid-December with a second round opening at the end of January. Students can select up to 3 projects to apply for and need to submit a supporting statement and evidence of their academic performance to date. Selection will be done via interview by the supervisor – arrangements will be made to interview students who are not based in Sheffield.
You will also need to factor in any deadlines with your main university to be released for intercalation.
