There has been growing interest in recent years in the application of management and leadership principles to multi-professional organisations in health and care settings. Although the climate of multi-disciplinary organisations such as the NHS is complex, interdependent and arguably fragmented, management and leadership behaviours play an active and influential role in the relationships and cooperation between different health and care professionals.

The MSc Healthcare Management programme responds to changes in medical education and careers. It builds on specialist management and leadership knowledge to:

  • Extend understanding of different management and leadership behaviours in context and take into account such influencing factors as the culture and climate of professional groups and the experiences of patients and service users
  • Increase knowledge about management and leadership within health and care and to engage with ideas and explore valuable alternatives from different enquiry paradigms
  • Make sense of a whole variety of challenges that belong to management and leadership roles – whether formal or not – in the NHS, many of which arise from a complex interaction between ethical, political and personal considerations
