Occupational Medicine is a varied and exciting speciality and one that is highly topical and important in the current climate. Our online blended learning MSc in Occupational Medicine will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the whole spectrum of medicine and hygiene within the workplace. You will benefit from access to a range of specialist knowledge and resources within occupational health and examine the evidence on which occupational health practice is based. The course takes place in a research-enriched environment and you will have the opportunity to undertake research-based activities (as part of your final dissertation) relevant to occupational health, including formulating a research question, designing and executing an appropriate study and drawing valid conclusions through writing a dissertation.

This course will equip you with the core knowledge required by medical practitioners working in the field of occupational medicine, and to allow you to pursue an academic qualification in this subject. We will teach you the rudiments of research methods, critical appraisal and critical objectivity so that on a life-long basis you will apply your knowledge to assess for, and make, evidence based decisions.

The overall core content available to all students will cover the following:

  • Occupational health policy and practice
  • Hazardous substances and risks to health, including introduction to toxicology, thermal and lit environments, noise and vibration
  • The concept of work-related and occupational diseases with specific focus on the mechanisms, recognition and causes of commonly reported disease
  • The concept of epidemiology and the principles of health surveillance, assessment and screening
  • The broader aspects of occupational health, including environmental aspects, food hygiene, accidents at work and the issues of global occupational health
